What Do Equity and Equality Mean?

The Differences Between Equity and Equality in the Workplace

Equity and equality are two words that are often used interchangeably in conversation but differ in some fundamental ways. Equality refers to treating everyone the same and giving everyone access to the same opportunities. Equity, on the other hand, attempts to make sure everyone has proportional access to opportunities based on their needs.

What Are Some Key Differences Between The Two?

Now that we have some understanding of what equity and equality mean, we can dig in to see what the main difference is between them. This is best illustrated by the visual of three people at different heights trying to pick an apple. Based on equality, the idea of giving people the same access to opportunities regardless of specific needs, each of the three people would receive the same box to stand on so they could pick an apple. That means the shortest person would not be able to reach the apple to pick it. However, based on equity, the idea of identifying and fulfilling specific needs informed by demographic traits (such as race, ethnicity, gender, etc.), the shortest person would be given the biggest box to stand on so they could pick an apple too. Essentially, equity aims to “bridge the gap between minority and majority groups”, while equality does not, according to HR Technologist.

Why We Should Promote Equity in the Workplace

Inclusion and having a diverse talent pool are essential to a thriving workplace and invite varying perspectives that can innovate and drive the company forward. However, in order to help achieve inclusion, one must first identify various barriers to entry and differences in the needs of employees to ensure equal opportunity. Equity can also benefit companies in multiple ways, such as driving employee engagement, preventing dissatisfaction, and equipping the entire company to work towards a shared mission. Furthermore, equity training in the workplace has been shown to help employees with diverse backgrounds integrate into the company and create an overall positive culture.
